CORE CURRICULUM
The term “core” is used to distinguish our foundational courses from our enhancement courses. Our core curriculum provides students with academics, skill building, reading practice, as well as character training.
The core curriculum includes basic academic disciplines that focus on essential educational needs: Math, English, Literature and Creative Writing, Social Studies, Science and Word Building (spelling). Each core subject contains 156 units from kindergarten through Level 12. Exceptions are math (144 units), Word Building, and Literature and Creative Writing (for Grades 2 through 8). Some core courses are enhanced with DVDs, videos, computer software, projects and laboratory experiments.
MATH
Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, & Calculus
The mathematics curriculum provides a logical orderly method of taking the student from the known to the unknown. From four-function math to algebra to differential calculus, the student learns how to approach mathematical problems in a well-grounded, logical step by step manner.
ENGLISH
Grammar and Usage
Our curriculum develops optimum language skills through its balance, scope and sequence. Each level moves student step by step, continually building on traditional grammar and usage concepts. Ongoing review and testing provide regular evaluation of the student’s progress in thinking, reading, and writing skills. Each unit integrates character building principles. The program includes extensive drill in the eight parts of speech with guided, step-by-step practice in research, essay writing, and the research process.
WORD BUILDING
Word Structure and Spelling
Word Building is a vocabulary controlled study of level appropriate words, root words, prefixes, suffixes, etc. Word Building increases students vocabulary base and reinforces their confidence and capability in spelling. Basic spelling rules are introduced and illustrated for the younger child. Older students learn the meanings of prefixes, suffixes, and root words so that they can build new words and expand their vocabulary.
SCIENCE
Animal Science, Biology, Physical Science, Chemistry, & Physics
The science curriculum takes the students’ natural curiosity about their physical environment and helps them build a solid foundation. Younger students perform simple experiments that co-ordinate the text with parental involvement in the learning process. Higher Level students will complete experiments, guided by a science teacher in a laboratory setting at RPIS.
SOCIAL STUDIES
History, Geography, Economics, & Government
Social Studies looks at world history and cultures. Through social studies, children and young people develop their understanding of the world by learning about other people and their values, in different times, places and circumstances; they also develop their understanding of their environment and of how it has been shaped.
LITERATURE
Literature & Creative Writing
In the Literature and Creative Writing course, younger students are encouraged to experience reading as a pleasure. Fictional characters lead the students through foundational concepts of writing. Many opportunities are given for creative thinking and writing along with written comprehension exercises.
In completing the literature course, older students get a sampling of the classics as well as more modern literature. With each book, they complete a study guide of questions, and in many cases, write an appropriate essay. English level IV provides students at the top end of the curriculum with examples and analyses of the best literature from various writers and literary periods of British and American literature.
Thai Language, Culture and History is one of core subjects offered at RPIS. It is a requirement of Thailand Ministry of Education that every international school in Thailand must teach Thai Language, Culture and History to all Thai and non-Thai students. At RPIS, every Thai and non-Thai student gets to experience Thai Language, Culture and History in a learning friendly environment.
